At first, you might think that a show like this is just trying to be a little too silly. Two brothers with the same name. Mom has a metal plate in her head. Every character in the show is a bit over-the-top. But, I'm here to tell you that it all works. And works really well.
To start with, the show is more like a story, and less like a comedy. Each episode is narrated by the older Pete, and he lays out the story reminiscent of Wonder Years and more recently, Arrested Development. Walking us through the plots, the twists, the character flaws, he truly becomes a master storyteller. The stories are usually simple, a bit odd, but always take us to a lesson learned.
I found myself laughing out loud (quite a bit, too) at the silliness of some of the scenes. When older Pete's baseball team started a losing streak, they brought on their new secret weapon - younger Pete. It wasn't his baseball skills they were after - it was his trash talking ability. He would spew out dirty secrets of the opposing players and completely psych them out. One player, anticipating the humiliation he was about to receive, just throws his bat down and confesses to his own dirty secret - "Ok, ok, I ate a booger. I didn't know it was a booger, I thought it was a pizza topping. And it was just once!". And then he broke down in tears and ran off the field. It's hard to resist a good booger joke.
I enjoyed this show when it was on Nickelodeon in the early years. But I enjoyed it even more watching it on DVD. These are great stories that thoroughly entertained me and I highly recommend they be part of your DVD collection.
